PURPOSE
The Automotive Technician is a highly skilled position, which provides support to other Town departments by performing preventive maintenance, diagnostic evaluation and repairs to a wide variety of Town-owned vehicles and equipment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs regular preventive maintenance on all Town owned vehicles and equipment.
- Utilizes a variety of diagnostic tools, equipment and systems to determine necessary and best course of action to repair Town assets.
- Performs specialized and complex work such as gas and diesel engine overhauls.
- Performs hydraulic and pneumatic system overhauls on emergency and heavy equipment.
- Performs plumbing system overhauls on fire equipment and computer controlled electrical system diagnostics and repair work
- Performs other types of maintenance and repair work on vehicles and equipment such as overhauling transmissions and differentials, ABS diagnosis and overhauling brake systems, and overhauling cooling and fuel systems.
- Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment such as tune-ups, oil changes, and lubrication and tire changes.
- Must have thorough knowledge of the safe and proper use of all shop tools and equipment.
EDUCATION, SKILLS AND CERTIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Graduation from technical school with a degree in Automotive Technology supplemented by two years’ experience as a skilled gas and diesel automotive and equipment technician or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Must possess a valid NC Drivers’ License and have an excellent driving record.
- A Class A NC CDL is required or must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
- Considerable knowledge of the theory, techniques, tools and equipment necessary for the maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and various light to heavy equipment common to municipalities, including Police and Fire vehicles.
- Skill in performing maintenance and repair of municipal motor vehicles and equipment.
Ability to use a variety of automotive and mechanical test instruments, OBD II
(computer) system scan tools and multi-meters, repair devices and hand tools.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read and write.
- Ability to read and interpret diagrams, instruction manuals and schematics related to work.
- Ability to perform strenuous work under varying weather conditions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
- Previous experience with rebuilding complex components and assemblies (such as hydraulic control valves) is highly desired.
- Proficiency with welding and fabrication is highly desired.
- Prior experience with A/C service and repair is highly desired.
- Must possess a NC inspection license or be able to obtain one within 6 months of employment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to lift and manipulate up to 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds regularly, and 25 pounds consistently.
- Must have the ability to maneuver ones body into a variety of spaces and potentially difficult positions in order to perform work on a variety of vehicles and equipment, including climbing/maneuvering onto, into, and under vehicles and equipment.
- Must have the dexterity to use tools and equipment utilized in this type of work.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- While the primary work location is in an indoor garage/shop, it is frequently required to work on vehicles and equipment in an outdoor area year-round in all weather conditions.
- The work environment may be excessively noisy, dirty and strong odors may be present.
- There are potential hazards due to running motors, heavy raised objects (such as vehicles on lifts), sharp blades (such as mowers, chain saws, etc.), and hot surfaces.
- This position may require occasional evening, weekend, holiday and call-in work.
- This position is considered an “ESSENTIAL POSITION”, meaning that work may be required during extreme weather events and other emergency situations.
