Utilities Maintenance Technician I
TOWN OF SOUTHERN PINES, NC
Performs a variety of heavy manual tasks to install, repair and maintain water distribution and sewer collection systems, read and maintain water meters, and install water and sewer service connections. The position is considered essential and may be required to work overtime during severe weather, as well as to be on call for emergencies outside of normal work hours. A valid NC drivers' license and excellent driving record are required.
The pay range listed is for the minimum and maximum for this position. Any offer will be commensurate with the skills and experience of the candidate.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
This position is classified as essential.
This class performs semi-skilled manual tasks not requiring a high degree of manipulative skills or previous experience.
Work assignments are repetitive in nature, and once learned can be completed without difficulty under general supervision.
Employees in this position are required to work with some independence and to utilize skills which require substantial on-the-job training.
Work may be inspected by superiors for technical accuracy.
The public contact requirement with utility services and the job hazards are significant classification factors, as well as interdepartmental relationships to facilitate task completion.
Employees must possess the ability to read and understand catalogues, manuals and manufacturer’s instructions.
The potential for on-the-job accidents and injuries for this class of employee is significant; therefore, the ability to follow safety procedures is a job requirement.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Ability to follow safety guidelines.
Performs all required functions to properly read, record, and furnish water meter data in an accurate and efficient manner for the monthly utility billing cycle.
Performs or assists in service maintenance to include disconnects, restores water service, checks for leaks, raises/lowers/cleans meters and boxes, and replaces registers as needed.
Independently operates manual and powered rodding machines in order to clear obstructions from sewer lines.
Assists in the repairs and extensions of sewer lines and installs new services by cutting pipes; installing proper couplings and connections; laying pipe; and manual digging.
Assists in cleanup activities to include vehicles/equipment/tools, shop and field work sites.
Assists in trench excavation, establishing protective barriers, lighting and guiding heavy equipment.
Assists in the operation of the combination sewer cleaner / vacuum truck.
Taps or assists in tapping water lines for new services.
Assists in the repair and extension of water lines; digs manually, lays pipe, cuts pipe, assists in the installation of meters and meter boxes, and provides other types of assistance.
Operates tapping machines, boring machines, pipe saw, mud-hog pump, motor tamp, jack hammer, pickup truck, and other tools and equipment as needed.
Assists in maintenance and repair of sewer lift station pumps, piping, and controls.
Assists in establishing traffic control to include barricades, cones, vehicle traffic flagging, and sign placement.
Assist Street division with storm drain inspection and cleaning.
Assists a variety of semi-skilled tasks with other Public Works departments, when needed.
May be required to perform or assist in maintenance in confined spaces.

Some knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety requirements of equipment and machinery used.
Good knowledge of procedures, materials, tools, and equipment relevant to assigned tasks.

Ability to operate and maintain hand tools and other appropriate equipment.

Ability to work with sewer lines and sewage.

Ability to read and write.
Must be physically able to bend, lift and carry up to 75 lbs. and climb ladders.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Ability to perform assigned tasks.
Some experience with tools and manual work is preferred, and ability to read and write is necessary.
High school graduate or GED required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license with an excellent driving record.
